Willie Mae Samuel, 2020 HOC Award Recipient

A native of Allendale, South Carolina, Willie Mae has been a resident of Rome And Floyd County for 50 years.

She received her undergraduate degree from Paine College in Augusta and her Master’s degree in English from Atlanta University with a concentration in African-American Studies.  She spent 31 years as a classroom teacher of high school English.

Since retirement she has involved herself in many phases of volunteer work.

Peggy Nash, 2020 HOC Award Recipient

 A graduate of Shorter College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and a Master’s Degree in education from Berry College, Peggy is now a retired Floyd County educator. She can be found volunteering at many places in Rome.

Jeff and Mary Margaret Mauer, 2019 HOC Award Recipients

Through decades of service to the community, the Mauers have committed their lives to the foster care crisis in Rome and Floyd County. They serve as Co-Founders of Restoration Rome.

Mary Margaret is a native of Homerville, GA and Jeff was born in Plainfield, Illinois. Jeff and his family moved to Rome when he was 10 years old.  The Mauers attended Oxford College and Emory University where they met.  They married shortly after graduation.  Mary Margaret received a Ph.D. from Georgia State University in Biological Sciences and Jeff received his degree from Shorter University in Business Administration.

A native of Rockmart, Georgia and a B.S. Degree graduate from the University of Georgia, “Nancy shatters the myth that people who work full time don’t have time to serve their community” Allison Watters.

2019 Heart of the Community Awards of Honor Recipients

On Saturday, February 9, 2019, eleven of Rome’s “unsung” heroes will be honored at the Heart of the Community Awards of Honor gala called An Affair of the Heart.  For 32 years, Redmond Regional Medical Center has sponsored these awards to recognize and honor individuals whose commitment through volunteer service has made this community a better place in which to live, work and raise a family.
